Union Street Grill and Grotto’s commitment to preparing sauces, salad dressings and marinades started them on a journey of sourcing fresh, local ingredients. Their interest in meeting the needs of their celiac diners prompted them to begin offering a dedicated gluten-free menu in 2008. Since then, serving the gluten free and food-sensitive has become a dietary way of life. By 2010, their use of quinoa as an alternative ingredient was saluted in Maclean’s magazine. Union Street continues to explore new flavours and textures. Only carefully sourced gluten-free flours are used for in-house baking. Gluten baking is outsourced, and kept apart through a colour-coded system for cutting boards and tongs. A dedicated gluten-free deep-fryer and charbroiler ensure that every meal is celiac-safe, from start to finish. And if that weren’t enough to have you beating path to downtown Courtenay, Union Street Grill offers a steady stream of live musical entertainment for our listening pleasure and is a strong supporter of local – from events to manufacturers!
“We first introduced a Gluten Free Menu at Union Street in 2008. Since then, we have changed a lot of our products, and created new sauces and baked goods that are all gluten free. Our cream soups, cream sauces, all our desserts and Tapas are all gluten free now. We offer substitutions with gluten free pasta, organic brown rice and rice noodles. You can still get burgers (although we’ve created “Tostadas” – our burgers on crispy corn tortillas), and our regular pastas. Our famous Steak Sandwich is still served on Artisan Potato Rosemary bread, but try it as a Tostada, you might be equally impressed!” Click here to view our gluten-free menu
