PROVISO: ‘Gluten-Free’ Food Trucks & Food Stands on Vancouver Island

Despite current snow flurries, Vancouver Island’s vibrant food truck season is about to begin. Fortunately for the celiac community, we are privileged to partake of food trucks who have made a 100% gluten-free commitment. Bravo!

  • There are an increasing number of  food trucks that handle gluten who are also keen to accommodate gluten-free diners. That is great news but their interest in doing so presents a dilemma for celiacs.

Celiacs can trust that these food truck operators take our dietary needs very seriously. Every effort is made on their parts to minimize the risk of cross-contamination. Ingredients are carefully vetted,  utensils are dedicated, prep areas designated and strict cleaning procedures all help to reduce the risk of cross-contact.

However, because of the shared environment, close quarters with a number of staff, limited access to water and the pressure to serve long line ups of diners as quickly as possible, food trucks that offer both gluten and gluten free admit, to their credit, that they cannot guarantee food advertised as gluten free may not have come into contact with gluten despite best efforts.

It is for this reason that The Celiac Scene is only able to endorse food trucks and food stands that are 100% gluten (with a single carefully considered exception.)
