Island Farms Reverses Gluten-Free Commitment with ‘May Contain’ Provisos
How disappointing! Our beloved Island Farms has gone the way of Wal-Mart, adding the proviso, “May contain: Peanuts, Tree nuts, Wheat, Soy, Egg” to their ice cream products. Only the 4-litre tub of Vanilla Ice Cream does not currently offer that proviso.
Be sure to check the ingredient labels of all Island Farms products you intend to purchase going forward i.e. sherbet, yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream and milk.
- Backstory: The Celiac Scene was contacted by a highly-symptomatic celiac who had always enjoyed Island Farms Ice Cream. Recently, she experienced symptoms she associates with gluten ingestion that prompted her to check the ice cream label. When she read the new proviso, she notified The Scene. Thank you, Kim!
Without a label that indicates that products with ‘may contain provisos’ are gluten free, the Canadian Celiac Association advises celiacs that a product with
‘NO “Gluten-Free” claim AND a “Contains” statement for wheat or other gluten ingredients’ should be avoided.

The source of that information (https://islandfarms.com/gluten-free-product-list) no longer exists. Instead, on September 20, 2022, a statement on https://islandfarms.com/gluten-free-product-list in regard to gluten free indicates,
- “Although our facilities are not certified gluten free, the majority of our products do not contain ingredients derived from gluten. Products the do contain gluten are labelled accordingly.”
If that is clear as chocolate chip cookie dough, please refer to the Canadian Celiac Association to guide your choices.
