Aren’t You Glad You (Don’t) Use Dial?

Farming runs in the family at Okanagan Rawsome
Okanagan Rawsome’s mission is to awaken your taste buds to delicious raw, sprouted, gluten-free and vegan living! Afke Zonderland, Chef & CEO shares how easy it is to live a whole-food philosophy and make the healthiest choices for yourself and your family.
Do you remember the slogan:
Aren’t you glad you use Dial?
Don’t you wish everybody did?
In 1888, Armour and Company, a meat packing house in Chicago, began producing soap made from tallow, a natural by-product of slaughter houses. The addition of the ingredient hexachlorophene, the soap was made antibacterial, and renamed as Dial, chosen because it offered round the clock protection against the odour of perspiration.
One could confidently dance the night away and not worry about getting close when the music slowed down. However, Dial did not do much for the smell of silage that would stubbornly cling to the local farm boys, but that’s another story. (Urban dwellers note: silage is fermented semi-dry grass that is fed to the cows in the winter along side hay that carries a pungent, identifiable aroma!)
In 1970, the FDA banned the use of hexachlorophene amid reports that it caused neurological damage in infants. Armour and Company replaced it with triclocarban, a different name for basically the same toxic chemical, which was ultimately banned in in September, 2016 1 out of concerns that it acts as an endocrine disruptor. 2 This after 25 years of additional profits by Armour and Company.
It is interesting to note that both chemicals and many subsequent derivatives are still in skin care products, shampoo, toothpastes, mouthwashes, talcum powders and hand sanitizers. You will also find these banned chemicals in drugs to treat various skin diseases. CONTRADICTION ALERT! Hexachlorophene was banned 46 years ago as a neurotoxin and it is currently used as a drug or cream that hopes to cure acne and psoriasis?
All antibacterial soaps have been called into question for making us ‘too clean,’ and have been implicated in the proliferation of so many autoimmune diseases. Our skin happily absorbs anything and everything – and that includes chemicals!
I believe that it would help us all if we were to bypass mass produced cleaning products and closely read the ingredients of all creams and lotions. We could replace them with home-made skin cream and lotions that are organic and mostly plant based. You can easily add your favorite essential oils that are shown to be an effective treatment for many skin diseases.
Be safe – and smell great!
