Earths Own Gluten Free Zero Sugar Oat Milk fb

  • From Earth’s Own, “In our last conversation, we talked about how we’ve had to switch to standard oats to keep supporting Canadian farmers and have enough oats to make our Oat Milks. We know this change was super disappointing to our amazing gluten-free community, we were bummed about it too! So, we rolled up our sleeves and went back to the kitchen to find a solution. This new Gluten-Free Zero-Sugar Oat Milk started rolling into stores, starting with Metro, Loblaws, Sobeys, Save-on-Foods and Safeway and it will be available across Canada at most major retailers in the next few months.”

Why did you change your Oat Milk to no longer be gluten-free?

We are currently updating our packaging to remove our gluten-free claim and switching over our formula from gluten-free to standard oats. We will be starting with our shelf stable oat products in January, but this transition will happen over the next couple months. You may actually see two different packaging on shelf for a short time.

You are probably asking yourself, what does this mean? I thought oats were naturally gluten-free? And you are right, they are! However, oats may come into contact with other grains that contain gluten (like wheat, rye and barley) either at the farm, in storage or during transportation. So, we’ll continue to buy Canadian oats, but the main difference is that our oats will no longer go through the same level of allergen testing and can’t be claimed as gluten-free.

So why are we making this change…

This past summer the environmental impacts of heat waves, fires and drought significantly hurt the harvesting of oat crops across North America, reducing the supply of oats overall and even further limiting the availability of gluten-free oats.

Because of this, we’ve had to make the really tough decision of moving forward with standard oats in order to keep supplying you with your favourite Earth’s Own oat milk. It is really important to us to keep sourcing the very best oats, which we know are grown right here by Canadian farmers.

We are just as disappointed as you are, but it reminded us (once again) that climate change is very real. We believe very strongly in the power of a plant-based diet as science has shown that it is the number one thing we can do as individuals to help fight climate change.

Is the gluten-free removal on your Oat Milk temporary or is this a permanent change?

At this stage, we don’t see this being a temporary change. We want to continue to support our local Canadian farmers and use the best possible homegrown oats to meet our growing oat milk demand, even if it means losing the gluten-free certification.

However, we are always exploring new product innovation and a gluten-free oat option is at the top on our list! We’ll be going back into our kitchen to create tasty new oat milk options and will be sure to share when we have something new and exciting!
